Hillwood Operations Update

Signs of spring are budding around the gardens and we are eager to begin a new season at Hillwood. Along with the arrival of spring, Mayor Bowser recently updated phase two relaxing a few safety restrictions across the city. While these changes have not impacted Hillwood’s operations, we thought it would be helpful to review our current operations, how to visit Hillwood, and what metrics we are monitoring for a safe return to on-site service.

No New Changes | There are no new changes to Hillwood’s current operational status and social distancing guidelines will continue to remain in place. To ensure essential staff required to work on-site have proper space for social distancing, about 60% of staff will continue to work from home, and on-site volunteer service will remain temporarily suspended apart from a small pilot team of Horticulture volunteers.

How to Visit | Advance reservations are required for an in-person visit with limited capacity in the mansion. Tickets are available for purchase on Hillwood’s website along with a review of the temporary visitor guidelines. In accordance with D.C.’s mayoral order, face masks are required at all times in both indoor and outdoor spaces. Masks are required for visitors over the age of two, including guests who have been vaccinated.

Looking Ahead | One of the key measures for reducing social distancing and increasing capacity at Hillwood will be a reduction in community spread and an increase in staff vaccinations. Currently, DC has fully vaccinated 10% of its population, ranking it second to last in vaccination distribution. While eligibility for vaccinations opens to the broader community across the DMV later this spring, we anticipate the vaccination of staff may be completed by summer or early fall.

As we monitor the situation closely, we will continue to keep you abreast of any changes to our operational status. In the interim, Hillwood will also continue to offer our beloved volunteers safe engagement through online educational offerings and enhanced communications.

As always, we deeply appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we continue to adapt. We look forward to having you and the rest of the staff back on-site once it is safe to do so. Until then, please stay well and take care.
