As part of Hillwood’s strategic plan for sustainability and accessibility, we are excited to share information on two major mansion projects planned through 2028.<\/p>

Window Replacement Project<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

The mansion’s 92 original windows and five doors will be replaced to improve energy efficiency. The project will be completed in three phases starting this fall and continuing through 2028.<\/p>

Phase One: Pavilion | Fall 2026<\/strong><\/p>

Phase One will focus on the Pavilion, with installation scheduled for fall 2026. The project is expected to require an approximately eight-week closure of the room.<\/p>

The Pavilion will be closed<\/u><\/strong> to the public from October 13 through December 14.\u00a0Please note that these dates are subject to change if the delivery date of the new windows is delayed or otherwise changes. To facilitate safe and efficient window installation, the Pavilion will be deinstalled at the start of the closure and reinstalled once the project is complete. The closure will also provide the Collections team with an opportunity to complete several projects in the room, including conservation, cleaning, and stanchion upgrades.<\/p>

Impact on Mansion Tours<\/strong><\/p>

From October 13 through December 14, the Pavilion will be temporarily removed from the mansion tour route. The rest of the mansion tour will remain unchanged. The room order and time allotted per room will stay the same.<\/p>

During the closure, the Portrait of Lloyd Patterson<\/a>, on loan to Hillwood through March 2027,\u00a0will be moved to a temporary location in the entry hall, above the demilune table adjacent to the coat check. The portrait of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich<\/a> (2015.4) currently on view in that location will be moved to storage. Both portraits will return to their original locations when the Pavilion reopens in mid-December.<\/p>

Staff will follow up with mansion docents prior to the Pavilion closure to ensure they are prepared for the temporary adjustment to the mansion tour route.<\/p>

Visitor Communication<\/strong><\/p>

Visitors will be notified of the closure through email, Hillwood’s website, and signage in the mansion and on arrival in the visitor center. Visitors interested in learning more about the Pavilion will be directed to the visitor brochure and mobile audio tour, both of which include information and images of the space.<\/p>

Phases Two and Three<\/strong><\/p>

Phases Two and Three are planned for 2027 and 2028, respectively. As we get closer to each project, additional information will be shared with volunteers and staff.<\/p>

Gallery Expansion & Elevator Modernization<\/u><\/strong><\/p>

Beginning in 2027, the second-floor gallery in the mansion will be expanded to improve accessibility and increase exhibition space for the collection, including fashion and jewelry displays.<\/p>

The project will also include the\u00a0installation of a new elevator with an additional half-stop between the second and third floors, upgrading accessibility in the mansion and increasing access to the second-floor gallery.<\/p>

Elevator Construction | 2027<\/strong><\/p>

Elevator construction is expected to begin mid-year 2027. The elevator is anticipated to be closed<\/u> <\/strong>from summer through fall, with an estimated\u00a020-week period when the elevator will be unavailable\u00a0in the mansion. The construction schedule will be finalized in 2027. During this time, Hillwood will roll out a robust communication campaign to keep visitors informed of the closure and any impact on their visit.<\/p>

Additional information about the project, schedule, and temporary impacts to mansion tours during elevator construction will be shared with volunteers and staff as plans are finalized.<\/p>

Hillwood staff are also exploring options for sharing images and information of the rooms and select objects from the second floor with visitors who are unable to access the floor via the staircase.<\/p>

Gallery Construction & Reopening | 2028<\/strong><\/p>

The second-floor gallery design and installation are expected to be completed in 2028, when the gallery will reopen to the public.<\/p>
